Initial settings:
Remove the chain completely
GENTLY screw the high (H) and low (L) mixture screws all the way in
screw each one out 1 3/4 turns (rich setting)
start the engine
adjust the idle speed screw to where the clutch dings occasionally
low speed needle adjustment (L)
1. turn the screw clockwise (lean) until the engine runs smoothly
2. readjust the idle speed screw
3. continue turning the low mixture screw in slowly until the engine rpm begins to decrease STOP
4. turn the low mixture screw out 1/8 - 1/4 turn
5. record the setting for future reference
high speed needle adjustment (H)
NOTE: special care must be taken when adjusting the high speed screw. an overly lean setting can severely damage an engine. refer to your owners manual for additional instructions
6. start the engine and run at full throttle
7. turn the high speed screw slowly in (clockwise) until the engine rpm peaks and then begins to decrease. release the throttle
8. turn the high speed screw out 1/4 turn (counterclockwise)
9. record the needle setting
10. readjust the idle speed screw so the clutch dings occasionally
Test
your engine should pull strongly from start all the way to full speed. if the engine bogs at low speed it is running too rich, and if it stumbles it is running too lean.
Here is an excellent video on how to correctly tune your engine, watch and learn.
